Chapter eleven

Copper Finds the Last Customer

"Detective Bean…". Jake's gaze dulled as Wendy approached us.

Wendy ignored him and walked straight towards me, pulling me by the elbow to talk privately. "Why are you here? Don't tell me you're working for Jake Rivers."

I chuckled sheepishly. "Well, he did hire me. And you know that my business was struggling. I couldn't just turn him away!".

Wendy glared at me. "Is it really about your business or your professional curiosity?"

"Why can't it be both?"

Wendy emphasized, "Because your friend is the detective in charge of this open case. "And I don't think you should be investigating an open case, Molly. This could be obstruction of justice."

I gasped and put a hand on my chest, feigning disappointment. "Are you threatening me right now, Wendy Bean?"

Wendy glared at me for a second. Then she snorted and said, "Of course not! I'm just trying to be spiteful for once."

"You're not angry that I'm also working on this case?"

"Nah, if anything, the added competition makes me want to work harder. Let's race to see who solves this case first", Wendy offered with a menacing grin.

I rolled my eyes at her playfully. "I don't think it'd be appropriate for us to place a bet on someone's life, Wendy".

"No one has to know, just like no one will know you're working this case because I'll keep my mouth shut." Wendy pretended to close a zipper across her lips. "Of course, no one will know if you keep your investigation discreet and you don't get in the police's way".

She clapped my back. "Well, I'm off to interview Aubrey Jenkins. I'm sure she'll be pissed meeting two investigators on the same morning. Ciao."

As Wendy departed, she gave Jake a pointed look, a friendly warning.

Wendy also doubted Jake's involvement, but her sense of duty came first. Regardless, she left us unscathed.

Jake and I returned to Whisked Away, which resumed operations today.

Despite the rumor that Whisked Away's owner could be a murderer, the place still bustled with customers occupying the tables and falling in line for their delicious pastries. No one cared about poisoned cupcakes.

Copper was a crowd favorite as he freely strolled around the bakery, greeting us as we arrived.

"Have you been a good girl?" Jake petted Copper.

He pointed me to one of the empty chairs in the outdoor dining area. I headed there while Jake whipped out another delicious treat for me. Copper trailed behind Jake the entire time.

Spending time with Jake might be the death of my slim waist, but I couldn't complain. I realized why people waited in line at Whisked Away.

Within a few minutes, Jake returned with two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. "It's too early for another meal, so I just brought juice."

"Thank you," I said, politely pulling the glass towards me.

"So, if Aubrey doesn't know anything about her husband's affairs, how would we know what Tom and Fred were really up to on the morning of Mr. Jenkin's death?"

"That's a good question. We could look for someone to confirm they were together.
